Postini has labelled the latest Sober e-mail virus (worm) the biggest outbreak in history. Over the last seven days they have quarantined more than 218 million Sober-infected messages, twice the previous record rate:
This latest variant of the Sober worm arrives as a .zip file email attachment in a message appearing to be from either the FBI or CIA. As with previous Sober variants, this worm can also disable antivirus protection.
Though computer users are continually urged to employ caution when opening attachments, the realism of the message and source meant many opened the infected messages, causing the Sober worm to spread rapidly across the internet.
Given the amount of viruses we saw filtered out from our own e-mail accounts last week, we'd have to agree, it was massive.
