The Sunday Times has reported that 'The Carphone Warehouse' is expected to announce a large investment in unbundled (
LLU) broadband services this week. To date their only foray into ADSL has been through BT's own wholesale product, which has given them 70,000 broadband customers:
In a note, Christian Maher, telecoms analyst with Investec Securities, said: Carphone Warehouse is not currently a major player (in broadband) but the opportunity is there for the company to drive massive growth over the next 24 months.
More than 8m Britons already have broadband internet access, a market that is led by the likes of BT, NTL, AOL, Wanadoo and Tiscali.
However, its broadband market rivals acknowledge that Carphones strong brand and chain of more than 500 UK stores give it an advantage in distribution. It remains to be seen exactly how big TCW's investment in
LLU will be and what kind of packages they plan to deliver, although no doubt bundled voice/broadband offers can be expected.
