E-Mail & Websites Top 2005 Data Traffic

Posted: 02nd Jan, 2006 By: MarkJ
One of Europe’s largest network exchanges, the Amsterdam Internet Exchange, has reported that e-mail and website browsing remained top of online services for 2005 by hogging a combined 48% of all data traffic.

The runners up were..:

19% - Usenet (newsgroups).
14% - Streaming multimedia (online videos and audio)
13% - Peer-to-peer (misc. files and music).
4% - Online gaming (multiplayer).
3% - VoIP (Voice-over-IP).

No doubt the amount of junk e-mail is a major contributing factor for the services dominance. However, perhaps the biggest surprise from above is online gaming, which would have barely registered in previous years.
