The latest xDSL Aggregation Hardware report from Infonetics Research has found that global subscriber numbers surged 70% between 2003 to 2004 (98.5 million) and are expected to more than double (195.6 million) come 2008:
The market will benefit from the imminent arrival of the higher bandwidth VDSL2 standard which will allow providers to offer revenue-generating services such as networked personal video recording, video on demand, audio on demand, 3D graphics, interactive games, e-commerce and video telephony.
"The DSL market is strong and will continue steady single-digit annual port growth through 2008, in part because VDSL2 technology is just around the corner," said Michael Howard, principal analyst at Infonetics.
"VDSL2 chipsets with multi-rate ports will allow providers to deploy VDSL2 for new premium services to some customers, while offering ADSL2+ or ADSL to others. 2006 will be a year of VDSL2 testing, trials and initial rollouts, with SBC and providers in Asia leading the way."VDSL2 technology is quite popular in some countries; however the UK is far more likely to focus on ADSL2 because of an already well established and largely compatible network/customer base.
