European Union (EU) ministers have made little progress with proposals to log phone and Internet data for use in the tracking of terrorists. Industry experts and law enforcement officials raised concerns from civil liberties to the potentially high costs involved.
EU ministers heard will, in the coming weeks, have to reconcile the need for tighter security with the expenses incurred by companies if the measures are adopted. Telecom representatives said the meeting had been their first opportunity to put concerns to EU ministers, calling the proposals an "unsophisticated approach to a complex problem".
One Danish minister launched a particularly hostile attack on the industry, requesting that they should stop all their whining," she told reporters. "When you know these people are making money making their systems available to criminals, then maybe they should have a more humble attitude."
We can't help but feel that 'fear' based marketing is being used to great effect in the pursuit of such proposals, which go far beyond merely targeting terrorism and that's the main problem.
