The so called "father" of the Internet, Tim Berners-Lee, has told the British Computer Society that he regretted inventing double slashes for addresses (http://).
Reportedly, if given the chance to do it all again, Lee would have dumped the double slash and put domain names in reverse order. For example:
http:/co.uk.ispreview
We agree that the double slash is a little odd, but the alternative isn't exactly inspiring. Mind you, these days a lot of people just start at www. (if not the domain by itself) and forget about the bit in front anyway =).
