Tiscali has joined AOL UK and BT in giving its own opinion on the "free" broadband service by Carphone Warehouse:
The truth is nothing is ever really free. Customers will have to make a decision on three services. You will have to move your line rental away from BT and will be tied to a monthly voice subscription - that's a minimum monthly spend of £21, with additional call charges on top of that. Carphone Warehouse is in a position where it needs to protect its CPS voice base or it runs the risk of decline.
The company is also in a 'chicken and egg' situation. It has an ambitious LLU investment plan but only 75,000 broadband customers. It will have to grow its broadband base dramatically to justify the investment and conversely it will be some time before it has the LLU coverage to break even with these customers - hence the loss leading land grab. As indicated by Dunstone himself - execution is key and the ability to provision and service a high volume of broadband customers is yet to be proven.
