Pipex (
Tiscali) has today been named and shamed by
Ofcom for failing to provide their broadband customers with ADSL Migration Authorisation Codes (MACs). Under the regulators rules (GC22) - UK ISPs are required to supply users with a MAC upon request and within five working days:
But todays notification highlights a number of occasions where
Pipex failed to abide by these rules and requires them to ensure that they are compliant by the deadline of 23 January 2009.
Ofcom will closely monitor
Pipexs performance to ensure that the company does now comply with the rules. If, following the January deadline, we believe that
Pipex has failed to take appropriate steps to comply with the notification we will consider whether further enforcement action is necessary.

Tiscali has been one of the worst offenders in the past. However, despite recently surpassing 300 on our
ISP Complaints Page, they had appeared to be improving.. slightly.
Ofcoms ultimate sanction in this case could be a penalty of up to 10% of
Pipex's relevant turnover, though we expect the provider would want to resolve the bulk of this issue before that became a possibility.
