Thieves Rob BT's Mayfair Exchange of Internet Connectivity

Posted: 11th Sep, 2008 By: MarkJ
Thieves struck BT's Mayfair telephone exchange last night, stealing essential routers, network cards, fibre and leaving local residents and businesses without telephone and Internet access.

Police are currently investigating the incident, which took place at around 9:30pm. The Register reports that BT is desperately trying to source replacement kit and offered the following update:

BT Statement: "We can confirm there was a break-in at our Mayfair Telephone Exchange last night (Wednesday), this is a now an ongoing police investigation and therefore we are unable to comment further. BT apologises for any disruption caused to our customers. Our engineers are working around the clock to ensure that full service is up and running as soon as possible."

The Mayfair exchange is known to serve over 3,000 residential premises and 4,000 non-residential premises (businesses and local services etc.).
