The principal analyst for Informa Telecoms and Media, Julian Herbert, has hinted that telephone and Internet providers are starting to view broadband Internet TV (IPTV) services as a means of fighting the
Mobile Broadband threat:
"
IPTV has had a direct effect on the rate of fixed-line decline and has... incrementally increased revenue overall," he told
ZDNet. "
Anecdotally
IPTV reduces churn. It definitely reduces line loss
and the enthusiasm we sense from the telco community for IPTV just is not subsiding," said Herbert.
Presently there are over 100 IPTV deployments around the world, though analyst house Analysys recently predicted that roughly 25% of UK broadband homes would switch to a
Mobile Broadband service by 2013.
However, to date UK IPTV deployments have received a mixed response, with
Tiscali's in decline and
Orange most recently shelving similar plans for a second time. Presently
BT Vision is one of the only operators to achieve any real traction, while both Sky and Virgin make for difficult to budge TV focused competition.
