2008 Virgin Media Broadband Developments Summary

Posted: 16th Oct, 2008 By: MarkJ
Virgin Media has sent us a summary list of the various broadband related developments that have taken place during the course of this year. Naturally we've reported on everything that's listed below but it still makes for a useful list of past and future developments:

# 4-10Mb Upgrade: Announced February '08, Virgin Media has recently completed a major upgrade programme to boost the UK's internet speeds. Customers previously on our 4Mb broadband service were gradually upgraded for free to 10Mb, giving Virgin Media customers the ability to do more at once, and all at over twice the speed.

# Phorm: Whilst we're still exploring this technology, no firm commitments have been made to launch. We may want run a trial in the future if we get to that stage, but right now there are no updates nor any decisions made.

# Newsgroups Service: Launched over summer, Virgin Media now has one of the best newsgroup services of any ISP. Our newsgroups offer binaries with a 7-day archive and text-groups with a 90-day archive. The Virgin Media newsgroup service is one of the fastest ways to keep up with conversations and grab files for download, and is provided free for all Virgin Media broadband customers.

# Unlimited Use: Virgin Media maintains an unlimited service through all its broadband packages - from 2Mb to 20Mb on cable and at upto 8Mb on ADSL. Some ISPs only provide unlimited usage with their top tier packages, however Virgin Media believes all customers should be able to enjoy using their broadband as much as they want without the worry of exceeding any form of fair-use limit.

# Power to all People: In conjunction with Digital Unite, Virgin Media has pioneered a programme to get older folk online through free broadband and computers for 17 sheltered housing schemes up and down the country. Giving many residents the chance to experience the world wide web for the very first time, Virgin Media is proud to be leading such a great initiative.

# Testing the speedtests: Virgin Media lab research has found most speedtests are unable to report accurate figures for high-speed broadband like our 20Mb service, and especially in the case of our forthcoming 50Mb service. Knowing that customers rely on information from comparison sites, we've started a programme to help the various sites with speedtests get their technology up to date ahead of the launch of 50Mb. With the goal of improving industry standards in this kind of reporting, we'll be publishing the results of our analysis from November so that customers know which speedtests work with 50Mb, so consumers are able to get the most accurate information when hunting for fast broadband or just testing their own connections.

# 50Mb Broadband Launch: Virgin Media's 50Mb broadband service is on track to go live from later this year, completing roll-out into 2009. As the UK's fastest home broadband service, 50Mb will allow families to share the internet at the same time, as well as allow individuals to download at incredible speeds and do much more at once. There's a lot of buzz about this important launch already, and more information on the launch of 50Mb will be coming soon.

It's worth pointing out that Virgin's explanation of "unlimited" has a tendency to receive a lot of flak for being potentially misleading, especially with quotes like the last bit: "without the worry of exceeding any form of fair-use limit."

In reality if customers download too much during certain times of the day then Virgin Media can impose traffic management (view the policy here), which is applied to all cable packages at different levels.
