PIPEX Extends SDSL Coverage

Posted: 03rd Aug, 2004 By: MarkJ
UK ISP Pipex has extended its broadband SDSL (symmetric - same speed both ways) coverage to include Leeds, Bristol, Edinburgh and Manchester:

PIPEX extends SDSL coverage to major UK cities

PIPEX, the telecom network operator and provider of business broadband solutions, has extended the coverage of its SDSL offering beyond London to include Leeds, Bristol, Edinburgh and Manchester. The new service provides business customers with a cost-effective high-speed alternative to traditional leased line Internet access.

PIPEX has been offering SDSL services to customers in the London area for around 12 months and, following recent product development, is now offering customers in other major UK cities the benefits of fast and reliable SDSL services.

SDSL is similar to a traditional leased line Internet connection - a copper circuit is used as a high-speed digital link - but is much more cost-effective. The service provides flexible symmetric bandwidth for business applications, such as email, file transfer, web browsing, corporate Intranet access, web hosting and remote LAN access. With a fixed monthly fee and no dial-up or call charges, businesses have complete budgetary control. It is possible to contend SDSL in the same way as ADSL – sharing bandwidth across multiple connections – and PIPEX is now able to deliver 10:1, 5:1 or 1:1 contended services.

Jeremy Penston, Product Director at PIPEX, comments, “Although leased line technology provides an incredibly reliable and robust connection to the Internet, it can also be expensive, which is obviously off-putting for many companies.

Uncontended SDSL is a genuine substitution for leased line technology. The contended versions of the product are available at a lower price point, providing suitability for less intensive use. SDSL provides fast, easy, reliable and cost-effective access to the Internet, coupled with the flexibility to increase bandwidth on demand to cope with growth. There will always be a place for Leased Line connectivity, as part of our High Availability or high bandwidth services, but SDSL is ideal for medium sized businesses that want up to 2Mbps.

With the extension of our SDSL footprint, these numerous advantages, that have only been previously enjoyed by businesses in London, will be rolled out to customers in other metropolitan areas.
”

Tim Bennett, Product Manager for Access Services at PIPEX, adds, “We are very pleased to see the dramatic increase in SDSL coverage over the last 12 months and expect it to accelerate. This availability will provide us with increasing opportunity to service the geographic requirements of our customers for high bandwidth broadband services.”

PIPEX SDSL Access services are available in a range of bandwidth options – 512k, 1Mbps and 2Mbps. The service can easily be upgraded between bandwidth and/or contention ratio, without additional equipment or site visits. This flexibility enables PIPEX to offer an affordable and yet scalable Internet solution.
