Bulldog & Thomson's SHDSL Deal

Posted: 14th Oct, 2004 By: MarkJ
UK ISP Bulldog has signed a new deal with Thomson for its SHDSL Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) kit. The deal forms part of the provider’s broadband expansion plans (38 to 400 exchanges over the next 18 months):

The agreement is part of an expansion programme, which will see Bulldog increase the number of its SHDSL equipped exchanges from 38 to 400 over the next 18 months. Under the agreement, Bulldog, will provide Thomson SpeedTouch 605s and 610s routers as part of its Bulldog 2&2 Office and SoHo SDSL broadband services for small businesses.

As the market for SHDSL becomes increasingly competitive, Bulldog needs to ensure that it can provide customers with high performance, cost effective SDSL CPE. Following a thorough technical benchmarking, Bulldog selected Thomson's SHDSL CPE range as the backbone of its SHDSL service push. With Thomson's four year heritage in the SHDSL CPE market, Bulldog felt that its SpeedTouch range offered the best combination of performance, functionality and ease-of-management. In particular, the advanced remote-management functionality in the SpeedTouch routers will greatly simplify the installation and support of Bulldog customers. The SpeedTouch boxes also come equipped with Quality of Service capabilities ensuring that Bulldog can support voice and video over SHDSL in the future.

"Business continuity is critical to Bulldog's increasing customer base." said Claudio Scola, Bulldog's Business Products Portfolio Manager. "Thomson's reliable and cost-effective SHDSL routers allow Bulldog to maintain its high service availability that our customers have come to expect."

Varying feature requirements at end users will require Bulldog to cater for customers right across the spectrum. It will offer SHDSL customers both the 605S, offering entry level specifications ideal for those with an existing firewall, LAN and VPN, and the 610S (office in a box) with built in features including LAN, IPSec and VPN capabilities.

"With the increasing use of high-bandwidth outgoing applications such as web servers and video conferencing, the upload speeds of ADSL simply aren't enough for many small businesses. With over four years of SHDSL development behind us Thomson is well positioned to help service providers and their customers capitalise on the availability of new SHDSL services," said Ghislain Lescuyer, Executive Vice President, Thomson Broadband Access Products. "Bulldog is pioneering SHDSL adoption in the UK and we are proud that they have chosen to work with us."
