The Sunday Telegraph newspaper has reported that BT Retail is considering a move into the LLU market, which can offer greater broadband speed and service flexibility. However, such an entrance could anger some of its rivals:
If BT Retail - the arm of BT that markets directly to the public - invested in LLU, its requirement to buy services from BT Wholesale would be vastly reduced. The interdependence of the two largest parts of the BT Group would be eliminated.
LLU allows telecoms companies to offer cheaper, higher-speed broadband internet connections and services such as video on demand. In France, where LLU is much more widespread, a company called Iliad offers a 3MB internet connection, unlimited voice calls and multi-channel TV for just 30 (£20.50) per month. In the UK, a 1MB broadband connection alone costs that amount.Typically BT Retail will still need permission from regulator Ofcom before proceeding, although they seem quite chummy these days so that shouldn't be a problem.
