Easynet Brings ADSL To Staffordshire

Posted: 01st Jul, 2003 By: MarkJ
Telecoms and ISP group Easynet has, through the process of local loop unbundling (LLU) and a partnership with Advantage West Midlands, managed to bring broadband to Staffordshire business parks:

Broadband coming to Staffordshire Business Parks

A partnership between Easynet and Advantage West Midlands shows how local loop unbundling can create viable state-of-the-art infrastructure in areas with no access to high-speed broadband services.

Advantage West Midlands today announced that broadband will be introduced to the Dimsdale and Waterhayes Farm exchange areas in Staffordshire over the summer of 2003, providing hundreds of local businesses in the Lymedale Business Park and surrounding area with affordable, unmetered ‘always-on’ high speed Internet access.

This is the fourth area to benefit from the Advantage West Midlands Rural Broadband Pilot for SMEs. Earlier in the year broadband services were introduced in the Herefordshire town of Leominster, Bredon Hill in rural Worcetershire and Upton Magna business park in rural Shropshire.

Following a competitive tender process Easynet has been selected as the infrastructure provider for this pilot and will soon begin installing the necessary equipment in BT exchanges. Businesses will be able to take advantage of Easynet’s high quality broadband product set including the fastest ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line) services available in the UK at 8MB, two-way 2MB SDSL (symmetrical digital subscriber line) and SureStream, Easynet’s competitive alternative to expensive leased lines for dedicated Internet access with service level guarantees.

James Saunby, head of ICT at Advantage West Midlands, said: “To be competitive, businesses must have access to low cost, high speed internet services. We chose Easynet because they met our criteria for a solution that offers excellent value for money, high quality services and establishes viable broadband infrastructure for the long term benefit of the area. The Rural Broadband Pilot Programme is proving a great success and is helping us to put together ambitious plans for getting broadband rolled out across the West Midlands”.

David Rowe, CEO, Easynet said: “This is an important milestone for the development of Broadband Britain, as it is the first time that Easynet has used local loop unbundling to bring Broadband to exchanges that had no immediate prospect of being enabled by BT. Providing every business, no matter where they are located, with access to broadband is absolutely critical for the realization of the Government's vision of Broadband Britain. This is a great example of how Easynet is working in partnership with the public sector to deliver broadband, and we’re delighted to be working with Advantage West Midlands to give local businesses access to some of the very best value and innovative broadband services available on the market today.”

Nigel Senior, External Funding and Partnership Officer at Staffordshire County Council said: "broadband will make businesses in this area more competitive and attract new businesses to the Business Park and surrounding sites and industrial estates. This service will allow businesses in the area to prosper, and we look forward to working with Advantage West Midlands to resolve this same issues in other areas of the county that are still waiting for broadband."

The Lymedale project, part of the Regional Development Agency’s Rural Broadband Pilot for SMEsis using funding provided by Advantage West Midlands and the DTI UK Broadband Fund to gain an understanding of how broadband coverage can be extended to areas outside of existing coverage. As well as supplying a grant to Easynet, Advantage West Midlands is guaranteeing a minimum number of customers for the service as part of the agreement and will assist Easynet in its initial marketing activities.

In the UK, according to the telecoms regulator, Oftel, there are now more than 2 million broadband users and over 30 000 new connections every week. However, under the BT Broadband registration scheme, the Dimsdale exchange has only 33% of the required registrations and the Waterhays exchange has yet to have a trigger level set, meaning that it could be some time before broadband is deployed to the Lymedale area.

IT and media consultants Analysys have been managing and co-ordinating the pilot programme on behalf of Advantage West Midlands. Andrew Wilson, a senior consultant at Analysys, said: "By guaranteeing a customer base from the start, we have reduced the risk of deploying broadband services, allowing Easynet to deploy a service in an area they would not otherwise have considered."
