BT is planning to offer its broadband customers a special software download and renting service called '
Software To Go'. Everything from games to applications could be included:
A trial of the Software To Go service will be conducted in April, letting customers download and run full PC programs for a limited time at a fraction of the cost of buying the software outright. A commercial service is expected to launch this summer.
BT first announced Software to Go in July 2001, when renting software over the net was seen as the next big thing. However, a service was never launched and the idea has laid dormant in BT's labs until recently. We've always had strong doubts about such services, but perhaps BT can succeed where others have failed.
