Broadband Helps Evolve Home Surfing

Posted: 04th Mar, 2004 By: MarkJ
The latest research from NTL finds that broadband has helped to transform the role and use of Internet access in homes. A typical broadband household will spend 25 hours online per week, with 73% of such homes using the Internet everyday:

New research shows how broadband transforms the role of the internet in the home

New research, issued by ntl on the day it becomes the first UK ISP to have installed one million homes with broadband internet services, shows that broadband is transforming the role the internet plays in people's everyday lives.

Aizad Hussain, Managing Director of ntl home, said: “Broadband integrates the internet into homes to become as practical as a telephone, and acts as an entertainment device to rival the television, radio and music centre rolled into one. Our research has shown that broadband homes are higher value and more educated than typical and we believe that our tiered service has ensured that the many benefits of broadband can be enjoyed by all for a fraction of what is spent on a single visit to the local cinema.”

Trends amongst ntl’s one million broadband connected customers show:

• Time spent online increases with broadband – average broadband households spend 25 hours a week online

• Daily usage - 73% of broadband homes use the internet every day

• Email communication thrives - 46% of broadband users send 10 or more emails from home a week – 30% send more than twenty

• Broadband users send twice as many emails compared to dial up users

• More family websites - 21% of broadband users make use of their webspace and have set up a website – more than double that of dial up users

• Broadband users incorporate the net into the way they manage their life
- 54% bank online compared to 30% of dial up users
- 75% use broadband as fast check of everyday services (eg maps, routes, times etc)

• Broadband users consume entertainment on the net
- 54% regularly download entertainment compared to 26% with dial up
- 40% download music regularly
- 26% watch online videos

• Travel, shopping, education, music and entertainment are the most popular websites visited by broadband users

• 46% of broadband homes have two or more PCs in the home

• 46% of broadband users have a games console – of these a third is interesting in connecting their console to the broadband network

Once broadband is installed, it becomes the most convenient way to shop, research, manage accounts and get great value on holidays. Increasingly it has become a significant way in which customers get their entertainment, whether this is music, games, radio or videos.
