BT Officially Reveals 1Mbps ADSL

Posted: 15th Jan, 2004 By: MarkJ
Most of you will have read the earlier news item and therefore know as much as you need to about BT Yahoo! Broadband and BT Broadband's new 1Mbps ADSL package. For those that don't, here's today’s official announcement:

BT MOVES INTO THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY FAST LANE WITH LAUNCH OF 1Mb HIGH-SPEED INTERNET

BT has unveiled its fastest internet services yet with the launch of 1Mb broadband from both BT Yahoo! Broadband and BT Broadband.

Available from January 19, the consumer high-speed internet services offer speeds twice as fast as standard broadband and up to 20 times faster than traditional dial-up internet.

Users will benefit from instant web browsing, higher quality audio and video streaming, faster download of large files such as digital photos, music and graphics, and smoother online gaming.

The 1Mb service will be available to customers living within approx 3.5km of a broadband-enabled exchange, compared with around 6km for standard broadband. Around 75 per cent of existing broadband users will be able to have the new service.

BT's existing broadband users will be able upgrade for free to the new 1Mb service and will be able to continue using their current broadband modem.

To celebrate the launch, BT is also introducing a series of price offers around both its new 1Mb and standard broadband services.

Customers signing up online to either BT Yahoo! Broadband or BT Broadband (standard or 1Mb speeds) will receive a free modem and free connection - a saving of £70. This applies to all orders placed by March 31, 2004 and activated by April 30, 2004. Customers ordering by phone simply pay £25 for modem and activation. Again, the saving applies to all orders placed by March 31, 2004 and activated by April 30, 2004.

Pierre Danon, chief executive of BT Retail, said: "The arrival of 1Mb Broadband from BT simply makes the broadband experience even better - faster surfing, higher quality streamed-audio, smoother videos and online gaming. These benefits will be welcomed by all those who see broadband becoming a central part of their home entertainment set-up. It also takes BT one step nearer to achieving its target of 5m broadband connections by 2006."

"In addition, the special price offers we're introducing continue to bring broadband technology within reach of even more UK consumers, helping us play our part in making Broadband Britain a reality.
