Posted: 14th Jul, 2004 By: MarkJ
Zoom has today announced the availability of their new multi-purpose ADSL X5v modem for £99.99 inc. VAT. However the X5v is more than just a modem, it also includes Voice-over-IP, a router, gateway, firewall and four-port Ethernet switch:

Zoom Enters Voiceover IP Market With Affordable, Easy-to-Use Solution

Zoom Technologies [NASDAQ: Zoom] has today launched the ADSL X5v, the first product in the ZoomTel™ line of VoIP solutions and the first on the market offering a complete “plug and play” solution, affordable for consumers and small businesses.

When sold under the Zoom brand in retail stores, the X5v will be bundled with Zoom’s Global Village® VoIP phone service. The X5v will also be available to small businesses through the Zoom reseller channel.

Global Village® provides free VoIP calls to Global Village® customers and most other VoIP users anywhere in the world. It automatically sets up VoIP capabilities, making it simple to install for non-technical home and business users.

The Global Village® service also provides a free chat room for conference calls with up to four other Global Village® customers. There is also the option of fee-based services to provide very low-cost long distance calling to conventional phones, along with additional service features.

The solution will retail in the UK for £99.99, including VAT. “This price will make the X5v the most affordable route to VoIP on the market, with no on-going subscription costs,” says Peter Cox, General Manager, Zoom. “Our products and services allow a smooth transition at a pace dictated by the customer. Put very simply, no other product can provide this service for this price.”

The Model X5v integrates a VoIP voice port with a router, gateway, firewall, ADSL modem and four-port Ethernet switch. Integration of VoIP capabilities into a full-featured router solves security issues created by VoIP telephone services, simplifies setup, and lowers the total hardware cost. Zoom’s TelePort TM feature allows the same phones to be used for either conventional telephone service or VoIP calls.

The X5v and Global Village® service allow customers to choose the features and costs saving of VoIP calling along with a second phone line that provides the services and convenience of a conventional phone connection. Using the TelePort feature, the X5v will automatically use conventional phone service for emergency dialling, toll-free number dialling, or when power fails.
