Silvermead Re-Launches Satellite BB

Posted: 05th Jul, 2004 By: MarkJ
UK ISP Silvermead has re-launched its one-way satellite broadband service, which will now be based off the ASTRA platform:

Silvermead Re-Launches its Satellite Broadband Service with ASTRA

Silvermead, a leading internet and satellite broadband specialist, is using the ASTRA platform to upgrade its leading one-way consumer broadband-via-satellite service this month.

Silvermead's Satellite Broadband service offers unlimited internet access UK-wide through a range of high-speed packages starting at £19.99 (including VAT) for the 256k option, £29.99 for 512k, £39.99 for 1Mb and £59.99 for 2Mb. There is a one-off activation fee of £15 and the minimum contract is just three months.

To give customers real flexibility and affordability with installation, Silvermead offer both a DIY and managed installation options starting from as little as £59.99.

The DIY package is aimed at homes that already have a satellite minidish and comes in two PC versions - an internal PCI kit at £129.99 and a £199.99 external USB option - both include a satellite receiver, quad LNB upgrade, software and their printed get-started guide.

For customers who do not have a dish (or prefer not to upgrade the LNB themselves), Silvermead has a nationwide team of engineers who carry out dish installations and upgrades - normally within three to five working days. For this managed installation, there is an additional charge of £59.99 inc vat.

Silvermead are also pioneering the development of networkable, Windows, Apple and Linux compatible one-way satelltie hardware and expect to launch a new all-in-one device later this summer.

Silvermead Satellite Broadband uses the normal phoneline and modem for the return path (uploading) - so users retain existing ISP and email addresses - and prices include a free-to-air digital TV package of over 30 TV channels and more than 110 radio stations.

Broadband by satellite will appeal to the 19% of UK households (almost 5 million homes) who do not currently have access to terrestrial broadband or are connected to the 574 non-viable exchanges that BT has excluded from its ADSL rollout plan.

Finance is available on purchases over £120, and for a limited period, Silvermead is running an interest-free " buy now, pay six months later" promotion. Customers can sign up via the company's website at http://www.silvermead.net or by calling 08703 800 800.

The service is extremely safe thanks to the security features built into the ASTRA satellite path. The system uses 128-bit Blowfish encryption with separate keys for each session, it does not transmit the user's IP address, and passwords are not stored on (or transmitted from) the PC.

Minimum PC requirements for broadband are Windows 98 or later, Pentium 333MHz, 128Mb RAM, 30Mb disk space, USB port or internal PCI card slot and an internet dial-up connection. Free-to-air TV reception requires a Pentium 700MHz.

Silvermead has been delivering satellite broadband through a single minidish solution to homes and businesses in the UK since 2002. The principle of receiving digital television and internet access through a single, smart, discreet dish means that over 7 million homes in the UK are already equipped to receive Silvermead's service. If the dish is not already in place it is a quick and simple job to install along with the rest of the system.

Silvermead has already successfully migrated its existing customers to the new Astra powered platform, where they benefit from the increased speed, performance and stability of the Astra system.

The service has come in for some past criticism, so it'd be interesting to hear from any existing customers as to whether the access is up to scratch or not.
