The latest bi-monthly statistics from The Radicati Group make for grim reading. The research finds that SPAM (junk e-mail) currently accounts for roughly 45% of all mail, yet this will grow to a staggering 74% by 2008!:
Below you will find some fast facts from our various reports which you may feel free to use for citing in upcoming articles.
INSTANT MESSAGING
IM Spam or SPIM will grow from being 5% of IM traffic in 2004 to 39% of IM traffic in 2008.
In 2004, IM users get an average of 2 SPIM messages a day.
47% of corporations today have more than 1 IM product in use.
EMAIL & SPAM
In 2004, 45% of all email is spam. This will grow to 74% of all email in 2008.
20% of corporations today have not deployed an anti-spam solution.
Despite having deployed anti-spam filters, 17% of the messages received in user inboxes still constitute spam.
Over the next four years we expect costs of spam in Europe to reach 9,200M in 2004, and increase at an average annual rate of 75%, totaling 85,400M by 2008.
Yes, those wonderful new anti-SPAM laws are really doing there job (sarcasm mode off). Unless governments tighten up the law then using the Internet for communication (not just via e-mail) could become a nightmare.
