THUS Offers 1Gbps Internet Access

Posted: 15th Apr, 2004 By: MarkJ
THUS (Demon Internet) has introduced a new hi-speed Ethernet service capable of propelling data at speeds of 10Mbps to 1Gbps. Unsurprisingly the product is aimed squarely at larger organisations:

THUS LAUNCHES GIGABIT INTERNET ACCESS OVER ETHERNET

THUS plc today expanded its Internet access portfolio with a high speed Ethernet service. The new High Speed Internet Access over Ethernet service delivers a permanent, unmetered connection to the Internet at speeds ranging from 10Mbps to 1Gbps, depending on a customer's requirements, over THUS's UK wide MPLS network. It is designed to meet large organisations' need for faster, more cost effective Internet access than is available through traditional services like leased lines (64Kbps to 2Mbps) and ADSL (up to 2Mbps). Global engineering consultancy Arup is the first company to sign up to the service.

THUS is launching the service in response to growing demand for higher bandwidth, faster and more flexible Internet connections as access to the Internet becomes business critical to an increasing number of organisations. The service will help companies maintain the performance of their websites in the face of increasing traffic volumes; implement more sophisticated online applications and connect large workforces to the Internet. It will also enable services like IP-based VPNs.

THUS's High Speed Internet Access over Ethernet service is cost effective and highly scalable. Customers can increase bandwidth in increments quickly and easily, without investing in new equipment, and THUS can make the bandwidth changes remotely at short notice. The ability to increase or decrease bandwidth incrementally on an access circuit means companies only pay for the bandwidth they actually require, keeping costs down. Because local access is delivered via Ethernet, the service is markedly less expensive than traditional alternatives. In addition, because THUS delivers a whole range of high quality services over its MPLS platform, customers can migrate to other MPLS based services quickly and easily.

"Our customers are coming under increasing pressure to maintain high levels of performance on websites that are becoming more sophisticated, more bandwidth hungry and, at the same time, more business critical. For large organisations, this creates a need for significantly faster Internet access and we are seeing this demand grow across a whole range of sectors," explained Phil Male, Chief Operating Officer, THUS plc. "Our new High Speed Internet Access over Ethernet service will meet this need in a cost effective and scalable manner, ensuring that companies are able to make wise, long-term investments."

Arup uses this high speed service to support global VPN connections, corporate email and webservers. It provides business critical connectivity for a large number of UK and international partners.

"We have experienced rapid growth in our bandwidth requirements. While we see this as good news and a sign of our success, it also looked like a potential headache to manage. We were especially concerned that we would end up paying for bandwidth that we wouldn't use or that we'd invest in a service that wouldn't be able to grow with our requirements. We were reassured when we spoke to THUS and realised that it could provide exactly what we need - a cost-effective, high speed Internet access service that provides the bandwidth we need today, with the option to grow the service as and when required, backed up by excellent SLAs and support," commented Allistair Scott, Gateway Team Leader, Arup.

THUS's High Speed Internet Access service is also available at 4, 6 or 8 Mbps using multiple 2Mbps circuits and 34, 45 or 155 Mbps. It can be provided with managed firewall services and THUS provides 24-hour technical support as standard.

Sadly a 1Gbps home Internet access connection is still some way off =).
