The Wireless Lan Smart Card Consortium has begun promoting the use of SIM (mobile phone style) cards for public Wi-Fi (broadband wireless) hotspot authentication:
The specification features an EAP-SIM Handler that allows users to connect securely to Wi-Fi hotspots without fear of identity theft, and allows operators to offer a broader range of wireless Lan services to trusted smartcard users.
A WLan-SIM means that users carry a USB key containing a Sim card instead of having to remember complex log-on procedures. It's a clever idea and could potentially make it easier to integrate roaming Wi-Fi into PDA's and mobile phones. More @
