Campaign For Unlimited Broadband

Posted: 07th Apr, 2003 By: MarkJ
A new campaign site, AntiCap UK, has been setup for all those people stuck on UK ISPs (BTB, NTL) which have chosen to introduce broadband limits (bandwidth caps):

AntiCap UK confirms it's official Launch

On 7th February 2003 ntl:home placed their amended Acceptable User Policy for interactive services on their ntlworld website. Swiftly after, in response to the high levels of criticism, ntl:home stated they would monitor users downloads for 60 days before contacting the users and "advising them". The launch of AntiCap is timed to meet the expected challenge now ntl:home having completed this monitoring period.

Over the past few weeks the founders of the AntiCap campaign have been busy developing the anticap.co.uk website. This website is expected to become the primary focus of the campaign and means of communicating our ideas. We have also been working hard to set up a proper non profit organisation that is adequately structured to facilitate the campaign's development.

Parts of our website have been running in test mode for some while. We thank our initial users for their valued feedback and for their consideration with the effects of updates and modifications as our design ideas developed. With the formal launch of the site we hope to see our user and member base rapidly expand.

AntiCap’s Objectives

To provide a voice for users concerned at the imposition of residential broadband service usage limits.

To argue the case for the provision of unlimited residential broadband services by UK ISPs.

To advocate that where limitations can not be removed, they be fair and sensible and relate to demonstrable costs in the provision of service.

To advocate full disclosure of such limits to existing and prospective customers.

To encourage NTL:home to remove the cap and provide the unlimited service that customers signed up for.

Only a handful of UK ISPs have so far introduced such limits publicly, although we applaud ACUK for getting a head start because no doubt more will follow.

At the same time it's still important to remember that broadband isn't free and greater usage comes at greater cost to the ISP.
