BT Unveils Latest Broadband Strategy

Posted: 12th Mar, 2003 By: MarkJ
BT has today revealed a number of new initiatives that have all been designed to help push broadband services:

BT UNVEILS the HOME OF POSSIBILITIES AS NEXT STAGE OF BROADBAND STRATEGY

BT today unveiled its move into the home IT and communications market with the launch of a new concept called the Home of Possibilities at London's Ideal Home Show, backed by a multi-million pound advertising campaign.

At the launch, BT also unveiled a number of new products as part of its vision for a networked home. The Home of Possibilities is an important component of BT's strategy to grow the number of its broadband customers from one million this summer to five million in 2006. BT expects the new product and service launches to contribute over £100 million to BT Retail's 04/05 revenues.

As part of the Home of Possibilities, BT is launching:

* A low cost Home Monitoring service that uses the internet to alert customers to break-ins and emergencies via phone, text message or email for just £5 per month.
* A new Home Networking solution which links up to 10 computers and gaming consoles in the home with no new expensive wiring required.
* A Digital Media Player which takes advantage of the always-on nature of broadband to allow you to listen to streamed audio from your PC anywhere in the house.
* A partnership with Microsoft to launch Xbox Live, enabling users to play against opponents anywhere in the world in real time.
* The appointment of a director of Home Communications to drive BT's ambitions in this area.

BT's vision of the Home of Possibilities is one where, through the same broadband connection, every member of the household can work and play whenever and however they want. So multimedia devices, such as PCs, gaming consoles and media players will be connected throughout the house via a central hub, working from the same pipe and able to be used simultaneously and remotely.

The new solutions launched today include BT Home Monitoring, a web-based wire-free home monitoring service which can help to protect against break-ins and fires and can use panic buttons to help those inside the home for just £5 per month-cheaper than many traditional home monitoring services. It marries the power of the internet with services that customers already have (telephones, SMS, email for example) to provide a low-cost alert mechanism that helps provide peace of mind. As a self-install service, it also avoids expensive installation costs.

With BT Home Monitoring, events such as a break-in trigger a call to an internet monitoring service which alerts the user in the way they have pre-selected - through a choice of telephone call, email alert or even SMS text message. The customer uses the web to set their alert preferences and can update these on a daily basis if required. The "Monitoring System in a Box" will be available in May and will retail at £299.99 (including VAT), including 12 months free subscription to the internet monitoring service.

Also announced today is the forthcoming launch of BT's Home Network 1200 which allows up to 10 PCs, as well as gaming consoles and other multimedia devices, to be networked to one broadband line - meaning that there are no more household arguments over who gets to go online first. It allows simultaneous web-surfing and multi-player gaming for example, meaning a need for only one broadband connection. As well as allowing sharing of files and a single printer, installation of the Home Network 1200 is "plug and play" and does not require the home to be re-wired as computers plug into existing phone sockets. For just £249.00 (including VAT), the Home Network 1200 also gives parents the ability to control when and for how long their children access the internet. The product will be available from April.

Another first is BT's award-winning Digital Media Player. The portable player, which will be on sale this summer, allows streaming of MP3s, CDs and internet radio wirelessly from the PC to almost anywhere in the house and garden. So if you are a Spurs fan living in Scotland and you want to listen to home games on London local radio, or if you are an Australian living in the UK who wants to catch up with the hit parade down-under while you are cooking outside on the barbeque, this is ideal. Able to be used with existing HiFi systems and speakers, the BT Voyager Digital Media player will retail for £159.99 (including VAT). The Digital Media Player was the recent winner of the Best of Innovations award at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Finally, BT and Microsoft will be launching XBox Live in the UK and Europe on March 14, which means that, for the first time, XBox gamers will be able to play against opponents around the world at any time. BT Openworld is Microsoft's launch ADSL broadband partner in the UK and as part of the launch is creating a dual branded XBox/BT Openworld portal with BT's games portal - Games Domain. BT Openworld and XBox compatible broadband will be available at high street retailers HMV and Comet.
