The latest statistics from market researchers PointTopic have shown a wide dispersal of broadband xDSL growth in almost all markets, including the UK:
According to the researchers, almost every countrys market enjoyed double-digit percentage growth in the six months to 31 December 2002. Overall, the global DSL market performed significantly more strongly in the second half of the year, adding 10.3m lines, reaching a total of 35.9m, compared with a gain of only 6.9m lines in the first half of the year.
In Europe, the UK, France, Finland and Switzerland all saw 70 to 80% growth in DSL numbers during second half of the year. Across the world, countries as varied as Chile, Israel and Australia all increased their DSL lines by about 70% in the same period.
As these markets mature, the percentage growth rate is likely to drop as the installed base gets larger. But the evidence from the first wave of DSL countries is that the growth in absolute terms remains relatively steady after initial, rapid expansion.Clearly broadband xDSL services are turning out to be quite the crowd pleasers, which could make it all the more difficult for future (fibre) technologies to enter the market in the future.
