THUS BREAKS 1,000 ETHERNET LINKS LANDMARK
THUS plc, one of the UK's leading providers of voice, networking, Internet and contact centre services, today highlighted the demand for its Ethernet portfolio with the news that it has now sold more than 1,000 Ethernet links to customers across the UK. THUS today announced TOTAL E&P UK PLC, part of the TOTAL global energy company, and UHI Millennium, the higher education institution, as the latest customers to sign up.
"The fact THUS has now delivered more than 1,000 Ethernet links shows that organisations in the UK are embracing Ethernet," said Phil Male, Chief Operating Officer of THUS Plc. "Organisations spanning the energy, education, retail, and financial sectors increasingly see Ethernet as the most reliable and cost-effective way to make broadband applications and services accessible across the wide area network. THUS is the first and currently the only provider of Ethernet services on a UK-wide basis to carry the Cisco Powered Network (CPN) designation. This is a major differentiator with customers as it illustrates that our services are delivered over a reliable high performance architecture."
UHI Millennium Institute (UHI) - the Scottish Higher Education Institution that provides university level courses throughout the Highlands and Islands - is using THUS's Ethernet services to provide partner institutions with access to operational and curricular information and services. Commenting on UHI's decision to select THUS as its Ethernet supplier, Mike Macdonald, network projects manager, UHI said: "THUS was able to offer the LAN extension service, where its competitors where not, at a very competitive price. The ability to deliver a high speed connection to the site will allow for an enhanced learning experience for the students. This will also allow the use of IP based video services and collaboration around the institute and outside."
He continued: "As the incumbent provider of UHI's backbone network since 1997 we have been impressed with THUS's commitment to customer service and its ability to respond in a flexible way to deliver new services."
Ethernet already powers many company's LANs, but for the majority of companies when traffic enters the leased line Wide Area Network (WAN) to travel to another office, it can slow to less than 10% of the LAN speed. National Ethernet can remove this bandwidth bottleneck and opens the door to improved performance, greater usability in comparison to traditional data services and new ways of working whilst at the same time simplifying the overall network architecture that a company has to manage.
