Readers have reported that UK ISP
Plusnet has raised the price of its lower end unmetered dialup package, Connect Lite, to £9.99 per month and introduced an hourly cut-off:
As part of our commitment to consistently deliver the quality of service you expect, we are further upgrading the Connect Lite User service.
Connect Lite User is a contended dialup service, meaning you share your Internet access 'port' with fellow subscribers - providing you with great value Internet access at low cost. The service has however, been subject to high demand at peak periods, leading to occasional engaged tones at the busiest times of the day.
Earlier this year we began a program of improvements to the way that we manage our unmetered services. Free Night Time access, reduced contention, dedicated access numbers and additional port capacities have all been implemented in order to improve the levels of service. Even with these improvements, Connect Lite User remains affected by congestion at these busiest times.
We understand and wish to reduce the inconvenience caused by having to redial in order to connect. We will therefore shortly be increasing the number of access ports to levels exceeding design capacity for Connect Lite User. As a result of this, monthly subscription for the service will rise to 9.99 GBP. Additionally, a 1-hour cut-off will be introduced to this service, with reconnection remaining unrestricted. This will act to significantly reduce the number of engaged tones experienced.
As a Special Offer to Connect Lite User customers, in recognition of your continued custom and for a limited period only, you can upgrade to Connect Standard and pay just 9.99 GBP for the first month. It's worth pointing out that this service is designed for basic usage; never the less some users have clearly been angered by the change.
