BT Bundles Net Access With Freeview

Posted: 17th Oct, 2003 By: MarkJ
BT has today launched its new digital terrestrial (Freeview) TV set-top-box (STB) offer. For £129 you get the box, which also has an added advantage of built-in pay-as-you-go (local call rate) Internet access:

BT LAUNCHES NEW FREEVIEW DIGITAL TV DEAL TO TAKE ON CABLE

BT today challenged cable operators by announcing a new digital TV deal for its 19 million residential customers, which could save them £156 each versus ntl.

BT is offering its customers the Freeview service - 30 Digital TV and radio channels via a set-top box, including BBC Three, ITV2 and Sky News - together with pay-as-you-go internet access via TV for a one-off cost of just £129.00.

In addition to the interactive package, BT is also offering a basic option providing access to the Freeview service for a one-off payment of £89.99.

Fergus Crockett, managing director of BT's Consumer division, said: "We can now offer our customers a fantastic triple play deal of telephony, digital TV and internet to take on the cable operators directly.

Customers could save £156 in the next two years against the price of the equivalent packages offered by ntl for TV and telephony.*

We see this deal as a crucial offering which will tempt back to BT customers who have been on basic cable packages. We are keen to provide our customers with the best range of opportunities for home entertainment. We already have an excellent relationship with Sky, which is going from strength to strength, and this latest deal widens the options we can offer our customers.
"

Customers will make increasing savings against ntl after the initial purchase of the Freeview box, as it is a one-off cost, whereas ntl's TV package is a monthly charge.
The saving is also a result of BT Together option 1 being cheaper than ntl's 6p Talk Plan for all daytime national and local calls, friends and family numbers, most calls to mobile numbers and all calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers.

BT has chosen Netgem to supply the interactive adapter and Dijam (SetPal) to supply the standard version of the Freeview offerings.

Customers will be able to buy the set top boxes direct from BT by calling 0800 800 150 or visiting http://www.bt.com/btdigitaltv

But can you change the dialup ISP access on the box? Those with existing unmetered dialup ISPs and e-mail addresses may not wish to dial a metered number.
