BT is offering owners of the X-Box and PlayStation2 games console a combined router, modem and their broadband connection in one. The promotion applies to either a BT Broadband or BT Yahoo! Broadband subscription:
BROADBAND FROM BT FOR ONLINE CONSOLE GAMING
BT today announced the launch of two new products designed for the gaming community, enabling console gamers to get the most from their broadband. Broadband from BT for online gaming provides a service for UK gamers wishing to take their Xbox® or PlayStation 2 consoles online with broadband and play with other gamers across the world, adding a whole new dimension to their gaming experience.
The offering enables customers to get the most from their broadband connection by using a router modem, allowing them to connect their console and PC to the broadband line at the same time. Broadband from BT for games consoles is a fully compatible 'one-stop' service where customers can purchase a combined router and modem and their broadband connection in one, choosing between either BT Broadband or BT Yahoo! Broadband.
Also, by the end of 2006 it is estimated that 10.5 million PlayStation 2 and Xbox consoles will have been sold in the UK, more than a staggering one in eight of which (1.4 million) will be online*. This compares with a current estimate of 100,000 consoles online by the end of 2003*, and represents 1300% projected growth over the coming 3 years.
The percentage of UK broadband subscribers playing console games online is estimated to be 17% by 2006, compared with only 8.5% across Europe as a whole*. It is this burgeoning UK market that BT, along with Xbox and Sony PlayStation 2, are seeking to reach with this new service designed specifically for online console gamers.
The launch of Broadband from BT for games consoles further underlines BT's commitment to online console gaming in the UK, a commitment which has already seen the introduction of a number of promotional initiatives with games publishers including Ubisoft, SEGA, THQ and Activision as well as marketing and event based activity with Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation 2.
Information regarding the service and how to purchase it can be found at http://www.bt.com/onlinegaming Broadband from BT for online gaming will be further promoted through a CD-ROM containing a broadband demonstration plus trailers for forthcoming online titles on Xbox and PlayStation 2. The product launches with a £30 cash back offer valid until 31/03/04.
