New statistics from
comScore show that the UK online video viewing audience has grown by 10% over the past 12 months to 29.6 million unique viewers age 15 and older. The top 10 online video sites for UK broadband users in January 2009 were as follows (Ranked by Total Unique Viewers):
- YouTube (Google) - 23,523,000
- BBC (iPlayer) - 6,771,000
- Microsoft (MSN) - 4,344,000
- Facebook - 3,582,000
- Yahoo! - 2,998,000
- Amazon - 2,945,000
- Fox Interactive Media - 2,587,000
- AOL - 2,198,000
- Megavideo.com - 2,189,000
- Metacafe - 1,940,000
In total 4 billion videos were viewed online in the UK during January 2009, of which 99.5 million (2.5%) were watched on the Web sites of the top 5 television broadcasters: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, and Sky.
The majority of these videos were viewed on BBC Sites, which captured a 54.7 percent market share among the Big 5, followed by Channel 4 (23.8%), ITV Sites (13.6%), Sky Sites (6.8%) and Five.tv (1.1%).
The research also found that 80.1% of the total UK Internet audience has viewed online video, which equates to 280 million hours of video content in just January.
