Charles Dunstone, CEO of The Carphone Warehouse ( TalkTalk , AOL UK , Tiscali , Opal etc. ), has confirmed that the group will not "
switch off" Tiscali's broadband Internet TV ( IPTV ) service. In fact Carphone is now examining whether or not to expand its investment in the platform, which is said to have around 50k subscribers; we recently revealed that Ofcom’s data showed it had closer to 100k (
here).
It's no coincidence that Dunstone's remarks to the
Financial Times (FT) also include a reference towards participating in the BBC-led Project Canvas development (
related news), which aims to deliver an open on-demand broadband TV standard. "
We might say Canvas isn't the answer and we will go and reinvigorate Tiscali TV," he said, somewhat suggesting that how much help Tiscali TV gets will remain uncertain for a little while longer.
