South West Internet (SWI), a Community Interest Company (CIC) that has been established to provide broadband infrastructure to homes and businesses in the South West region (Dorset, Somerset and Devon), has proposed major new work to both extend and upgrade its existing network in the area.
The provider, which is a commercial venture with the support of Somerset County Council, West Somerset District Council and North Devon District Council, boasts that it has the largest single Wi-Fi network in the UK. The new enhancements would, among other things, augment that with 100Mbps + 1Gbps fibre circuits.
SWI's Tim Snape told ISPreview:
"My current network does not have a single inch of BT copper in it, it is entirely wireless and nearly 200 miles across. I believe it is the largest Wi-Fi network of its kind in the UK."
SWI's current service coverage extends from Bournemouth in Dorset, to Barnstaple in North Devon. The new video suggests that SWI will take advantage of WiMAX and 802.11n Wi-Fi wireless broadband technology to deliver both faster speeds and a greater range of services. SWI is currently looking for feedback from regional residents, as well as business interest and partners to help support their initiative. Check their website for more details.
