Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) and Huawei have offered up an interesting video demonstration today, which shows what their forthcoming next generation Long Term Evolution ( LTE ) Mobile Broadband technology can do. It highlights the streaming of live High Definition 1080p (HD) video at speeds of nearly 8Mbps (7540.6Kbps) and multiplayer gaming on a Sony PlayStation 3 console.
We note that O2's original December 2009 trial (
here) recorded a peak cell download speed of 150Mbps (Megabits per second), though future 4G generations of LTE could hit 1Gbps. Real-world performance will be considerably slower when shared between multiple users at the same time.
The 8Mbps performance depicted in this video is obviously far slower than O2's previous peak cell download speed of 150Mbps; though this is perhaps more reflective of what real-world speeds could be like. It's still faster and more reliable than the 1-2Mbps experienced by many people via existing HSPA based Mobile Broadband technology today.
