Internet and phone provider TalkTalk UK ( AOL UK , Tiscali , Opal ) has revealed its latest first quarter (Q1-2010) results, which saw its broadband ISP subscriber base grow from 4,197,000 in Q4-2009 to 4,231,000 in Q1-2010 (+34,000); a slowdown on Q4-2009's net adds of +42k.
Presently 77% of TalkTalk's broadband customers are using the groups cheaper unbundled ( LLU ) platform (up from 74% in Q4-2009), which is delivered via 1,748 unbundled exchanges (80% UK coverage). Group broadband ARPU was £23.90 per month in Q1, up from £23.30 at the end of last year.
Charles Dunstone, Chairman of the TalkTalk Telecom Group PLC, commented:
"I regard this as a very solid performance; we maintained our momentum in the broadband market, as our brand and tariffs continued to appeal to customers seeking straight-forward, value-for-money broadband and voice services. This was achieved against a backdrop of intensive work on integrating the Tiscali base. The programme is well on track to deliver all the synergies identified, and strengthens our platform for further revenue and profit growth. The progress made is best demonstrated by ending the quarter with 77% of our broadband base unbundled onto our Next Generation Network."
TalkTalk has also today signed a new MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operation) agreement with Vodafone UK, allowing it to launch its own range of mobile voice and Mobile Broadband services -
TalkMobile - alongside its existing products. Triple-Play bundles of mobile, broadband and home phone services are anticipated.
Charles Dunstone said:
"Over the last 5 years, TalkTalk Group has invested over GBP 1 billion to transform the UK broadband and voice market into one of the most vibrant and good value in the world. Our customers tell us that they expect the same value from their mobile services that they've come to expect from their home phone and broadband, so that's what we intend to provide. We've chosen Vodafone as our network partner as they have a proven network and a track record of success with their MVNOs."
Details remain thin on the ground but TalkTalk have hinted that their mobile service will include a range of SIM-only voice and data tariffs, which should launch sometime later this summer. TalkTalk also plans to introduce a consumer focused Project Canvas based TV service, by mid-2011, although it's too early to know what kind of package they will offer.
