Exploding Broadband Wi-Fi Internet Usage at UK Holiday and Leisure Parks

Posted: 11th Aug, 2010 By: MarkJ
bt openzoneThe title of this news might conjure up an image of a burly character running, in slow motion, from a huge explosion triggered by a wireless network but the reality is sadly somewhat more mundane. New figures from BT Openzone, BT's wireless Hotspot ISP, have recorded a rise in "glamping" (glamorous camping ) that is being driven by an explosion in Wi-Fi usage at UK holiday and leisure parks.

BT Openzone states that Wi-Fi internet usage has risen by no less than 350% in the first two weeks of the school summer holidays, with 60% of Openzone customers now using Wi-Fi to check emails and surf the internet in their leisure time.

Families in particular are believed to be increasingly turning to their iPhones, iPads and other Smartphone's for entertainment and inspiration to make the most of the unstable British weather, and to ensure they stay connected.

Chris Bruce, CEO of BT Openzone, said:

"Technology is coming to the aid of the traditional British holiday, as more and more people opt for more glamorous camping holidays. Wi-Fi is proving to be a simple but essential way for holidaymakers to access the internet and to keep their families amused during unpredictable weather."

Naturally BT Openzone is keen to point out that it provides access at many major UK holiday and leisure parks, including 71 Camping and Caravanning Club sites and three Pontin’s sites plus locations at Coastfields Leisure sites in Skegness through a partnership with Wicoms.

Apparently these sites are seeing regular spikes in Wi-Fi usage during school holiday periods, including a rise of 60% during the school Easter holidays; well how else can you check Facebook without internet access?

In related news a new study from Best Buy found that 85% of British folk enjoyed learning about new technology, although a quarter felt alienated by it and half worried that they were being left behind by the latest changes.
