Earlier this week it was revealed that the total number of worldwide broadband internet access subscriber lines had officially passed the 500 Million mark (
here). However Point Topic has also produced an interesting
Q2 2010 Map of World Broadband Penetration, which we've published below purely for interests sake.
As you can see the areas drawn in
darker green have a high level of household broadband penetration, while those of a lighter shade are the opposite. From this it's clear to see that many parts of
Africa and the
Middle East lack fixed line broadband services.
However the map itself only deals with "
fixed line broadband" penetration and it's important to remember that some parts of the world have switched to greater usage of wireless and Mobile Broadband alternatives (e.g. Philippines). If this were included then the picture could be quite different.
