The vast majority of broadband internet connections in use around the UK today are still run over traditional copper BT based telephone lines via
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line ( ADSL , ADSL2+ ) technology, which offers download speeds of up to 24Mbps (Megabits per second). This kind of internet access is generally very affordable and often quite fast but it doesn't always work as intended.
In fact ADSL performance and connection stability can suffer due to a whole mass of issues that include, but are not limited to, ISP congestion, poor home wiring, distance from the local telephone exchange (shorter lines result in faster connections, anything over 6.5Km is usually very slow) and interference from other electrical devices in the vicinity.
As a result we’ve constructed this
simple adsl tips and tweaks guide that's aimed at helping you to get the most out of your broadband line. This article is a complete re-write of our original '
ADSL Tips' guide from 2007; it should be easier to understand, include more useful advice and is more logically constructed.
