The communications regulator, Ofcom UK, has informed ISPreview.co.uk that their
latest research into UK fixed line broadband ISP speeds will be released on
Wednesday 2nd March 2011 this week. The new data is expected to show that the country's average internet access speeds have risen, while the gap between advertised and real-world performance will remain significantly wide.
Ofcom's
previous May 2010 data revealed that the average UK internet download speed was
5.2Mbps (Megabits per second), a fair increase from
4.1Mbps in April 2009. At the time Ofcom chose to respond to this by toughening its
Voluntary Code of Practice on Broadband Speeds with a new
Version 2 edition, although it will take more than that to solve the underlying infrastructure problems.
