UK FTTH Fibrecity Broadband Projects Get Back on Track Following Restructure

Posted: 21st Apr, 2011 By: MarkJ
fibre optic cable i3groupfibrecity dundee uk broadband logoCityFibre Holdings, the new company behind several much criticised projects to deploy a true 100Mbps FTTH fibre optic consumer home broadband service in several UK cities (Bournemouth and Dundee), has completed its lengthy restructuring exercise after acquiring i3 Group UK's assets (Fibrecity, H2O Networks, Opencity Media, Wireless Network Systems) earlier this year and most recently even suspending its services (here).

Greg Mesch, CEO of CityFibre and former i3 Group COO/President, said:

"The last few months have been very difficult for all those that have been affected. While restructuring the businesses, it was really important for us to save and protect the customer contracts, and the fibre to the home and metropolitan fibre optic networks. We hope that this restructure will come as good news for all those that have been impacted by the abrupt halt to works by our predecessors, including employees, customers, residents in the Fibrecity areas and suppliers.

We are extremely pleased that we are now in a position to begin growing a business again. We will develop more fibre to the home and also build more valuable metro-based networks such as the one just completed for City of York Council with our partner Pinacl.

We will soon start making good the works left unfinished by our predecessors in Bournemouth. We will begin by repairing the network, adding service providers and activating customers – we already have around 20,000 homes that are or can be connected to superfast fibre in the town.

CityFibre already has a fully built open access platform capable of serving multiple service and content providers, so we have no intention of becoming a service provider and competing in those markets. We want to work with all the major service providers and other telecom operators to further their business plans by building out fibre to the home in more towns and cities.

The company has memorandums of understanding to build Fibrecity networks with a number of towns and cities which represents over one million homes. We will develop a consortium with service providers, equipment vendors, financial institutions and city councils to build the next generation infrastructure this country so desperately needs. With the recent announcement that Google is building its first open access fibre to the home network in Kansas City, USA – a city with similar demographics to Bournemouth – it is the perfect time to develop the right formula to make the UK a leading fibre enabled country and make sure that it does not get left behind."

The news is promising but may also raise an eyebrow or two among those customers’ whom recently lost their connection as a result of the problems, some of which have since moved over to Virgin Media instead.

Unfortunately the update provides previous little information about when CityFibre might actually re-enable its existing customers, let alone adding any new ones.
