Cable giant Virgin Media has announced that its new "
ultrafast"
100Mbps (10Mbps upload) broadband ISP product can now reach
four million UK homes, which is a significant rise from just one million during Mid-March 2011.
The rollout first began at the end of last year, although Virgin's full deployment is
not expected to complete until mid-2012 when it will be able to reach half of the country (approximately 13 million households).
Virgin Media's Executive Director of Broadband, Jon James, said:
"As data consumption rises and consumers grow increasingly reliant on their broadband service, only Virgin Media’s unique network is primed to cater for the UK’s impending data explosion.
With four million homes now able to ‘get in the fast lane’ with our 100Mb service, the UK is racing up the broadband league tables and we’re delighted to be playing the leading role in boosting the UK’s digital infrastructure."
The service itself costs from
just £35 per month when combined with the £12.99
Virgin Phone Line service (£45 when bought as a standalone product). It comes with unlimited downloads (free of any heavy Traffic Management limits), a Virgin Media Super Hub (wireless modem router and USB adapter), unlimited online storage, Virgin Media Security: Total and more.
Meanwhile Virgin Media is also continuing to trial 200Mbps download speeds, although we probably won't see that until late 2012 or 2013. They also have a 1.5Gbps download trial in East London and are testing 20Mbps upstream speeds for the future.
