Mobile operator Orange UK (
Everything Everywhere) has launched a new
daily internet EU roaming tariff that offers all Pay Monthly and Small Business Mobile Broadband customers a
30MB (MegaByte) usage allowance for £3 a day. In addition, customers who don't use any data on a particular day won't have to pay.
Orange has also recently introduced a range of new 30-day (monthly) bundle deals too, which charge £15 for 30MB, £50 for 150MB or £150 for 500MB (0.5GB) when roaming around Europe.
Liz Wynn, Director of Orange's In Life, said:
"Travelling abroad is an exciting prospect for everyone and it is now easier than ever to stay connected to friends and family. Whether our customers want to upload their latest holiday snaps on Facebook or simply send an email sharing tales and adventures, many people consider internet access an integral part of any trip.
For this very reason we are introducing the new daily roaming bundle and have already revised existing monthly and 30 day roaming bundles for the EU to help our Pay Monthly customers get the most out of their mobile internet while in Europe."
Sadly customers who use more than 30MB in a day will be subject to a standard charge of
£3.07 per MB. Interestingly Orange believes that "
30MB covers 99.5% of all [a] customer's daily needs". We suspect that consumers would use a heck of a lot more than 30MB if only they could make economically viable use of mobile EU data roaming.
Last week the European Commission (EC) outlined a new set of proposals that should make it "
significantly" cheaper to surf the internet from your phone while roaming around the EU (
full details). Sadly the measures won't begin to take effect until July 2012.
