Avanti Communications, a UK based broadband
Satellite ISP, has teamed up with
Hughes Europe to showcase a new satellite
dual-feed antenna solution that combines
High Definition TV (HDTV) and broadband data signals.
The dual-feed antenna unit (aka -
dual-LNB) could allow Avanti to offer UK consumers a triple-play (bundled) service of broadband internet access, HDTV and VoIP (internet voice calling) via a single Satellite dish installation. This would obviously help to make such services much more attractive in rural areas.
Avanti's COO, Matthew O’Connor, said:
"This new offering will position us well to meet the continuing large demand for consumer broadband in underserved regions of Europe. It's a giant step forward to tap this huge market, and is evidence of our strong and growing partnership—combining Hughes global leadership in providing high-speed satellite Internet service, with Avanti’s launch of more HYLAS satellites in the coming years."
Hughes Europe's MD, Christopher Britton, added:
"This exciting new initiative demonstrates the viability of providing satellite TV and broadband Internet access easily and simply, with the need for only one set of cables and a small, compact antenna."
It's understood that the new service, which would aim to make the best possible use of Avanti's recently launched and 10Mbps capable
HYLAS 1 (
Highly Adaptable Satellite) spacecraft, will first be introduced to the
Southern European market before reaching other regions during 2012.
The setup is currently being demonstrated at the
IBC 2011 (Hall 1, Stand A50) event in
Amsterdam until 13th September 2011. Further details, such as how much the hardware and service will cost, not to mention what content might be available at launch, were not available.
