1Gbps UK Home and Business Fibre Optic Broadband ISP Hyperoptic Goes Live

Posted: 13th Sep, 2011 By: MarkJ
fibre optic cablehyperoptic logo uk ispHyperoptic, a new residential and business ISP that can offer affordable symmetric 1Gbps (1000Mbps) capable fibre optic broadband ( FTTH ) internet access and online television ( IPTV ) packages to urban areas, has officially gone live this morning. The service will initially be available to large residential and commercial properties in London, before moving to other UK cities in 2012.

The ISP is operated by two of the original founders from popular internet provider Be Broadband UK (Boris Ivanovic and Dana Pressman Tobak), both of whom moved on after the ISP became a part of O2 UK (Telefonica). Several other former BE staffers are also involved.

Hyperoptic's residential prices start at just £12.50 inc. VAT per month for a true 20Mbps broadband connection (Hyper-lite) and the top-end 1Gbps link (Hyper-sonic) will set you back £50. Customers will also have to pay another £12.50 per month for line rental, which includes free UK evening and weekend calls (i.e. total £25 for the 20Mbps bundle; add £3 for anytime calls and £5 for international calls). A £40 setup fee and 12 month contract also applies.

Dana Tobak, Managing Director of Hyperoptic, said:

"There is a preconception that fibreoptic is expensive and therefore, can not be made available to consumers. At the same time, the UK is effectively lagging in our rate of fibre broadband adoption, holding us back in so many ways – from an economic and social perspective.

Our pricing shows that the power of tomorrow can be delivered at a competitive and affordable rate. This really is the driving force behind Hyperoptic and we’re thrilled to be the first to bringing this exciting proposition to market.

The copper-based [ BT ] networks widely deployed in the UK right now were not designed for data transfer and really can’t keep up with the demands of new consumer technologies. As we don’t have a copper network to protect, Hyperoptic can go straight to fibre based deployments designed specifically for broadband and other data services meaning we can make each Hyperoptic building a showcase for Britain."

The ISP boasts that, thanks to its use of fibre optic cable, "all tests have shown" that customers' throughput on the Hyperoptic network will be 95% of their connection speeds. By contrast Ofcom recently noted that 37% of customers on ADSL2+ (up to 24Mbps) based packages received average speeds of 4Mbps or less (here).

Customers will also get "unlimited" downloads (Fair Usage Policy), a static IPv4 address, an IPv6 address, a HyperHub wireless-n router and free 24/7 support. At the time of writing the ISP wasn't able to detail what kind of IPTV (broadband TV) or Voice-over-IP (VoIP) services it would have available or when.

ISPreview.co.uk is currently conducting an interview with Hyperoptic and we hope to post that in the very near future, which should reveal more about their coverage ambitions and other services.
