Mobile operator Three (3) UK, the smallest of the country's five primary mobile operators (roughly 6.2 Million+ customers and an 8% market share), has today claimed that its internet traffic "
accounts for 40% of all of the UK’s mobile data traffic combined".
Apparently about
137 Terabytes of data pass across their mobile network every day, with
Facebook being the most frequently visited website (1.24 Billion Facebook page views per month). The operators recent return to offering "
unlimited" data plans for Smartphone users has clearly had an impact.
A 3UK Spokesperson said:
"60% of Three customers are now smartphone users, and we expect this number to rise to at least 90% over the coming year when many of our customers upgrade to the latest smartphones. This is brilliant, especially when you consider that last year only 30% of our customers used a smartphone to keep in touch and stay connected."
Three (3) is currently aiming to have 80% of its network upgraded to support the latest
HSPA+ (
21Mbps+) Mobile Broadband technology by the end of this year, with the rest following in 2012.
