Cable giant Virgin Media UK has released a "
major new update" for its internet security software suite,
Virgin Media Security, which is
included free alongside the operators broadband ISP packages. The suit is designed to protect your PC from online
malware (e.g.
Viruses,
SPAM,
Trojans,
Phishing etc.) and also comes with
enhanced parental controls that work to block adult websites.
The suite, which is powered by
Trend Micro's cloud-based '
Titanium' anti-malware technology and works to stop threats before they reach your computer, is now being
offered for free to all four million of the operators broadband customers (new and existing).
Jon James, Executive Director of Broadband at Virgin Media, said:
"We know that consumers are increasingly looking for more than just a ‘barebones’ broadband connection and security is an important part of staying safe online. Consumers need simple, but effective, tools to help secure their computers and personal information and as a responsible, family-focused ISP, we hope that by providing free security and parental control software our customers will be able to enjoy the best of the internet knowing that their kids’ online worlds are safe."
On top of that customers can also extend the functionality of the suite with a new feature called '
Identity +' at +£2.50 extra per month. This adds a range of
fraud and identity protection services, including
DataPatrol (Garlik).
Every month DataPatrol will scan millions websites to see if a user's personal information has been leaked, with full support and advice on what action to take if a family member's details have been compromised. Clever.
