Pure fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has today announced that their Gigabit (1000Mbps) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is now being deployed to the city of Glasgow in Scotland, with the first homes to benefit existing inside the ‘Glasgow Harbour’ urban regeneration area.
Glasgow is one of several major cities on Hyperoptic’s current deployment map, with others including London (this is where they have the most coverage), Cardiff, Bristol, Reading, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham and Newcastle.
The ISP generally tends to focus on connecting larger buildings (e.g. Multi-Dwelling Units with at least 50 units / apartments) or big office blocks and their service is already available to over 100,000 premises, although the medium-term plan is to reach 500,000 premises by 2018.
The provider’s deployment is demand-led and so tends to connect buildings where the demand from the owner or residents is highest.
Tim Huxtable, Hyperoptic’s National Team Manager, said:
“Hyperoptic chose Glasgow as its first Scottish city because of it’s thriving digital scene and the strong demand from residents. We will be investing millions over the next couple of years in broadband infrastructure across Glasgow, with the aim of having thousands of residents and businesses connected within the next year.”
John Swinney, Deputy First Minister, said:
“I am very pleased to welcome Hyperoptic’s substantial investment in Glasgow’s digital infrastructure. The future-proofed fibre infrastructure that will be delivered will make a key contribution to our vision of Scotland having world-class digital connectivity by 2020.
Hyperoptic’s investment will support Glasgow’s businesses and residents to access the modern digital infrastructure which is critical in supporting the wider transformation of the city, helping to attract new businesses, create jobs and support major regeneration.
As Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow will have a unique selling point as one of the most prominent digitally connected locations anywhere in Europe. This will raise Glasgow’s profile and we strongly welcome Hyperoptic’s investment in Scotland.”
A number of other developments in the city are also undergoing installation and should soon be connected, although Hyperoptic has yet to name them. Otherwise the ISP’s packages are priced based on whether or not you take a standalone (broadband-only) or bundle (broadband and phone), with Phone Line Rental typically adding £16 inc. VAT per month to the cost of bundled services. A 12 month contract is also applicable.
Hyperoptic’s packages also include a free wireless router, free installation (note: standalone users will have to pay £40 activation), unlimited usage and those who take the phone service will also benefit from free evening and weekend calls.
