Broadband internet connectivity across part of the County Durham (England) village of Shotton Colliery was left disconnected for five days earlier this week after Openreach’s local network was targeted by copper cable thieves. The activity also caused damage to some local fibre optic cables.

The Oak Tree Housing Association, which provides social housing across parts of Inverclyde in Scotland and owns 1,960 homes, has reached a new access agreement (wayleave) with Openreach (BT). The deal will enable the operator to extend their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across numerous buildings in the town of Greenock.

A number of Openreach’s rivals are understood to have raised fresh competition concerns with Ofcom after the operator introduced a new discount on upgrades (here). The offer was designed to help encourage ISPs to shift customers off older copper-based broadband services and on to newer full fibre (FTTP) lines, but not everyone is happy.

A number of homes, businesses and several network operators, including Netomnia (Youfibre, Brsk) and Openreach (BT), were impacted yesterday outside the City of Durham after vandals gained access to a chamber and cut vital fibre optic cables; disrupting local broadband connectivity for a protracted period.

Openreach has today notified UK telecoms providers that their SOTAP Analogue product will, following a “successful pilot” (here), get its full commercial launch on 28th October 2025. This is a phone line service that does NOT require broadband to work and will be targeted at vulnerable users who would otherwise struggle with migrating to an All-IP (internet) based phone service.

Network operator Openreach took a few communications providers by surprise yesterday after they gave them just 48 hours to remove any lithium batteries from BT exchanges. The batteries are said to be prohibited by the operator’s building safety policy “due to the significant risks … [of] thermal runaway, fire and explosion“.

Broadband, mobile and telecoms giant BT has today published a new economic modelling study from Assembly Research, which examines how the ongoing migration from legacy networks (PSTN/WLR, 2G mobile etc.) to All-IP (Internet Protocol) services could “deliver billions in benefits” (£3bn) to the UK’s critical national infrastructure sectors.

The CEO of BT Group, Allison Kirkby, appears to be gearing up for the government’s annual 2025 Budget announcement by complaining that the operator pays “10 times the amount our peers pay in countries like Germany and the Netherlands” on things like business rates, energy levies and other costs associated with regulation and compliance.

National network operator Openreach (BT) has this morning confirmed that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which offers broadband speeds of up to 1,800Mbps to homes via hundreds of UK ISPs, has now covered 20 million premises (up from 18.3m on 1st May 2025) and take-up has risen to around 38%.

New techy-focused broadband ISP Olilo, which only launched a few short weeks ago (here), has this week announced that they’ve just placed their first consumer Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) orders via the aquila platform from AllPoints Fibre Networks’ (APFN). The latter is a wholesale platform that aggregates connectivity from several different full fibre networks.

Openreach (BT), which is currently in the process of converting the “majority” of their commercial UK vehicle fleet (i.e. 23,000 vans and cars) to Electric Vehicles by the end of March 2031, has announced a new deal that will see myenergi supply thousands of smart ‘zappi’ EV chargers to its engineers – giving them a simple way to charge vehicles at home overnight.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today provided more details to ISPreview on their future plans for a trial of full fibre broadband (FTTP) using 10Gbps capable XGS-PON technology in early 2026. The trial is planned to reach about 40,000 premises in Guildford and push download speeds from ISPs up to a blistering 8.5Gbps (8,500Mbps).

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today announced the official launch of their new telecare migration services across the UK. The service is designed to help UK consumers with old analogue based phone (PSTN / WLR) and medical telecare systems to safely migrate to modern broadband-based (FTTP etc.) connections with digital phone (IP-based) services.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today revealed that broadband data traffic across their UK full fibre (FTTP) network alone increased by more than 35% between Jan and June 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. The busiest day so far was on 21st Feb, when a large Fortnite (video game) patch saw users gobble a total of 372PB (PetaBytes).
