BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK phone and broadband network, has invited ISPs to join its new 3 month proof of concept trial that aims to make providers and their customers more aware of when a Major Service Outage (MSO) has been caused by cable theft. Indeed it’s already helped police to make several arrests.

BTOpenreach has today announced a list of 8 telephone exchanges that will be used to conduct the first pilot of their unique FTTP-On-Demand service, which allows BT to deploy “ultra-fast” 330Mbps capable fibre optic broadband speeds to almost anywhere that their existing FTTC service has covered (66% of the UK by the end of 2014).

The European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA), which represents alternative / smaller broadband ISPs, has demanded that the European Commission (EC) “take urgent action” to prevent dominant national telecoms operators (e.g. BT) from using “discriminatory conduct” against them and thus damaging their ability to compete in the new market for superfast broadband (FTTx etc.) services.

BT has pledged to make superfast broadband (FTTC) ISP speeds of up to 80Mbps (Megabits per second) available to over 90% of Rutland’s (England, UK) 17,000 homes and businesses by the end of 2013. BT has informed UK ISPs that its legacy broadband retirement programme will, from November 2012, stop accepting new provide orders for its older 20CN based IPStream Connect products (e.g. mostly up to 8Mbps ADSL technology); albeit only at telephone exchanges where the latest 21CN based Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) solution exists as an alternative.

Approximately 20,000 BT broadband and phone customers in the Eastbourne and neighbouring Brighton area (dial code 01323), including local schools and hospitals, have today suffered a serious loss of connectivity after a power outage struck the local Eastbourne telephone exchange this morning at around 9:39am.
