The National Wealth Fund (NWF), which was originally established by the previous government in 2021 as the UK Infrastructure Bank (here) – using public investment to help unlock more private funding for infrastructure projects, looks set to change its funding strategy in 2026 after experiencing “challenges” in certain sectors, such as broadband infrastructure (altnets).

Broadband provider iDNET has recently added support for another alternative Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the shape of the ITS Technology Group. But this only covers business-focused full fibre packages, since ITS doesn’t currently offer residential products.

Customers of UK ISP Virgin Media’s broadband network in and around the Manchester area (Burnley) are currently suffering from internet connectivity problems after several fibre optic cables were damaged in the area. A separate cable break also appears to have occurred in the Birmingham area, which has added some further disruption.

Business ISP Baltic Broadband, which has long offered a mix of fixed wireless and full fibre broadband network connectivity to firms in the Liverpool area, has hinted at a possible expansion of their 100Gbps capable network to reach 2,000 more business premises located in offices, and business estates over the next 12-months or so.

Network operator CityFibre, which have so far expanded their 10Gbps capable FTTP broadband network to cover 4.6 million UK premises (4.3m RFS) and connected 730,000 customers, has today announced that BT Group’s former Chief Architect, Neil McRae, has been appointed to be the company’s new Chief Technology & Information Officer (CTIO).

The Fern Trading (Octopus Investments) backed company Vitrifi, which was first incorporated back in 2021 and offered a cloud-based software platform to help alternative network providers (altnets) offer wholesale products (details), appears to have filed a new notice stating their intention to appoint an administrator.

The ITS Technology Group, which has deployed various open access and business-focused full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks across parts of the United Kingdom, has today announced that their XGS-PON powered 10Gbps capable fibre network has now gone live across parts of Newcastle upon Tyne (Tyne and Wear, England) and Glasgow (Scotland).

Telecommunications infrastructure provider and licensed UK retail service provider Teleauora has revealed that they’re seeking new powers from Ofcom to help provide customers with “gigabit-capable fibre and wireless” broadband services – focusing on residential homes, offices, and business estates, in rural and urban areas across the UK.

Rochdale-based ISP Zen Internet has today announced that they’ve expanded their Direct Business connectivity portfolio to give UK businesses access to “more full fibre networks than any other ISP“. The main development seems to be the launch of CityFibre’s Business FTTP, Ethernet Flex and Direct Internet Access (DIA) services.

Connectivity provider Neos Networks, which operates one of the biggest 34,000km long and 400Gbps capable business fibre optic networks in the UK – spanning 550 exchanges, 90+ data centres and 600+ Points of Presence (PoPs), has completed the first fibre installation under Project Reach to help improve 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) coverage along major rail lines.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today opened a “narrow consultation” that proposes to amend their leased line access (LLA) market analysis for the ongoing Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR) to reflect a “greater potential impact” from Openreach’s Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) product (this allows rivals to run new fibre via existing cable ducts and poles).

The City of London (CoL) Corporation has picked Roc Technologies to deliver a new end-to-end networking connectivity solution, encompassing a UK-first enterprise SASE rollout for public services, AI-driven wireless capability and high-availability internet connectivity. The move comes after Roc reached a deal to harness Vorboss’ 100Gbps full fibre network in the area (here).
